START STRONG

Set Yourself Up for Success

Congratulations on your new job! The first few weeks are critical for building positive relationships and establishing yourself as a valued team member. Here's how to start strong.

Before Your First Day

Confirm Start Details
Verify your start date, time, dress code, and where to report. Ask about parking or building access if needed.

Request Accommodations
Now is the time to formally request any workplace accommodations. Contact HR in writing with:

  • A brief explanation of your disability (only as much detail as necessary)

  • Specific accommodations you need

  • How these accommodations will help you perform essential job functions

Your employer must engage in an "interactive process" to identify reasonable accommodations unless they would cause "undue hardship." The Job Accommodation Network (askjan.org | 1-800-526-7234) offers free consultation if you need help identifying effective accommodations.

Notify Social Security
If you receive SSDI or SSI, report your new job immediately. Call 1-800-772-1213 or use the online reporting system. Failure to report work can result in overpayments you'll have to repay. Your Ticket to Work Employment Network or WIPA counselor can help you understand how your earnings will affect your benefits.

Review Work Incentives

  • Trial Work Period: For SSDI recipients, you can work for at least 9 months while receiving full benefits, regardless of earnings

  • Extended Period of Eligibility: After your trial work period, you enter a 36-month period where you receive benefits in months when earnings are below the substantial gainful activity (SGA) level

  • Continued Health Coverage: You can keep Medicare for at least 93 months after your trial work period. Medicaid coverage may continue through special programs like Medicaid While Working

Your First Week

Arrive Early
Give yourself extra time for unfamiliar routes, parking, or building navigation. Being punctual (or early) makes a strong first impression.

Learn Names and Roles
Write down names, titles, and how people relate to your work. This shows respect and helps you navigate the organization.

Ask Questions
Don't be afraid to ask for clarification on procedures, systems, or expectations. Taking notes shows you're engaged and serious about learning.

Identify Your Go-To Person
Whether it's your supervisor, an assigned mentor, or a friendly coworker, find someone you can ask questions when you're uncertain.

Observe Office Culture
Pay attention to communication styles, meeting norms, and social dynamics. Understanding unwritten rules helps you integrate smoothly.

Managing Accommodations

Document Everything
Keep copies of all accommodation requests and employer responses. If an accommodation isn't working, request modifications through the same formal process.

Communicate Proactively
If you're experiencing challenges, address them early. Your supervisor and HR want you to succeed and should be willing to make reasonable adjustments.

Know Your Rights
Under the ADA, employers must keep medical information confidential and cannot discriminate based on disability. If you experience discrimination, document incidents and contact the EEOC at 1-800-669-4000 or eeoc.gov.

Working with Your Support Team

Stay Connected to Your Employment Network
If you're using Ticket to Work, your Employment Network provides ongoing support to help you maintain employment and advance in your career. Don't hesitate to reach out if you're facing challenges.

Utilize Job Coaching
Some VR agencies and Employment Networks offer job coaching support during your first months of employment. Take advantage of this resource.

Benefits Counseling
Check in with your WIPA counselor as your earnings change to ensure you're maximizing work incentives and maintaining needed healthcare coverage.

Long-Term Success

Track Your Progress
Keep a record of accomplishments, positive feedback, and completed projects. This builds confidence and prepares you for performance reviews.

Seek Growth Opportunities
Look for training, professional development, or additional responsibilities that align with your career goals.

Build Relationships
Positive workplace relationships contribute to job satisfaction and long-term success. Be a supportive colleague.
